Ambient temperature ------------------- The operating temperature range of the IDD is specified at a distance of 3 cm from the IDD. Air Circulation --------------- The heads, disks, and actuator are sealed inside a cover to kept out dust and other pollutants. This head assembly has a closed-loop air recirculation system using the blower effect of the rotating disks to continuously cycle air through the recirculation filter. This filter traps any dust generated inside the enclosure. To prevent negative pressure in the vicinity of the spindle when the disks begin rotating, a breather filter is attached. This breather filter also equalizes the internal air pressure with the atmospheric pressure due to surrounding temperature changes. DC Grounding ------------ For DC ground, a fasten tab is provided as the SG connector. Frame Structure --------------- The casting/DE (signal ground) is electrically isolated from the mounting brackets (frame ground). In this isolation is to be main- tained within the system, precautions must be taken. An embossed structure (or any other structure that does not touch the aluminium base) should be used to prevent the aluminium base from touching the frame ground. The mounting screws should project no more than 4 mm from the outer wall of the drive mounting bracket. System Configuration -------------------- Host system, IDDs, and other SCSI controllers are connected (daisy- chained) to SCSI provided that the total number of connected SCSI devices is a maximum of eigth. +--------+ |HOST (1)| +---------+ | | <-SCSI---+---------> | IDD | +--------+ | +---------+ | | +---------+ +---------> | IDD | | +---------+ | | | | +--------+ | +---------+ Other SCSI |HOST (2)| <--------+---------->| | Controller | | | | +--------+ +---------+ System configuration example Recommended parts for connection -------------------------------- +------------+-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | |Name |Model |Manufacturer | +------------+-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | Host |Cable Connector |FCN-7007J050- |Fujitsu | | interface |(IDD, closed-end)|AU/B | | | SCSI +-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | |Cable Connector |FCN-707J050- |Fujitsu | | |IDD, throughend) |AU/0 | | | +-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | |Cable |455-248-50 |SPECTRA- | | | | | STRIP | +------------+-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | Drive Power|Cable Connector |1-480424-0 |AMP | | Supply +-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | |Contact |170121-4 |AMP | | +-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | |Cable |AWG-18 | | +------------+-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | SG |Cable faston |62187-1 |AMP | | |receptacle | | | | +-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | |Faston tab for |61761-2 |AMP | | |the IDD | | | | +-----------------+---------------+--------------+ | |Cable |AWG20 | | +------------+-----------------+---------------+--------------+ Connection of components ------------------------ The following figure shows the cable connection between IDD and host system. Connector Requirements ---------------------- The nonshielded SCSI connector installed on the IDD is a 50-conductor connector consisting of two rows of 25 male pins with adjacent pins 2.54 mm (0.1 in) apart. The nonshielded cable connector shall be a 50-conductor connector consisting of two rows of 25 female contacts with adjacent contacts 2.54 mm (0.1 in) apart. Cable requirements ------------------ A characteristic impedance of 100 10% i srecommended for unshield- ed twisted-pair ribbon cable. A characteristics impedance greater than 90 is preferred for shielded cable. A minimum conductor size of 28 AWG shall be employed. It is recommended that shielded cable be used for connection outside of a cabinet. To minimize discontinuities and signal reflections, cables of different impedance should not be used in the same bus. The maximum cable length is 7m. 1m or more cable length is recommended between SCSI devices. ********************************************************************** F E A T U R E S ********************************************************************** FUJITSU M2244/2245/2246-S/SA/SB OEM MANUAL B03P-4805-0202A...01 Automatic data error correction ------------------------------- If a recoverable error occurs, IDD attempts to recover from errors inside the IDD. Correctable data error can be corrected in the data buffer so that error-free data can be transferred to the host system. Alternate block processing -------------------------- Defective blocks are replaced by alternate blocks. Host system soft- ware can deal with the entire space of the drive as if was defect- free. High-speed alternate block processing is available without seek operations, because an alternate block area is provided for each cylinder. Media defects ------------- Cylinder 0, Head 0 and 1 are defect free. Controller circuit ------------------ Imported functions are listed below: - Data buffer (8 KB x 2) - SCSI protocol control an ddata transfer control - Sector format control - ID register - SERDES - ECC - Data comparision and data error correction - Error recovery and self diagnostic Reformatting ------------ At the installation time, it is not necessary to initialize the disk medium if the sector interleaving feature is not used, because the IDDs have already initialize (formatted) with no sector interleaving at shipment. If it required to use the sector interleaving, or to change the sector size, the IDD must be reformatted according to the following procedure at the installation. 1) Connect the IDD to be reformatted to the system. 2) If it is required to change the sector size (data block length), issue a Mode Select command that specifies the new data block length as shown in the following table, prior to step 3). +-----------------+ +-------------------+ | CDB | | Parameter | +-----------------+ +-------------------+ Byte 0 | X'15' | Byte 0 | X'00' | +-----------------+ +-------------------+ 1 |0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 | 1 | X'00' | +-----------------+ +-------------------+ 2 | X'00' | 2 | X'00' | +-----------------+ +-------------------+ 3 | X'00' | 3 | X'08' | +-----------------+ +-------------------+ 4 | X'0C' | 4 | X'00' | +-----------------+ +-------------------+ 5 | X'00' | 5 | X'00' | +-----------------+ +-------------------+ 6 | X'00' | +-------------------+ 7 | X'00' | +-------------------+ 8 | X'00' | +-------------------------------+ +-------------------+ |X'000100' for 256 bytes/sector| +-- 9 |Block Length (MSB) | +-------------------------------+ | +-------------------+ |X'000200' for 512 bytes/sector+>| 10 |Block Length | +-------------------------------+ | +-------------------+ |X'000400' for 1024 bytes/sector| +-- 11 |Block Length (LSB) | +-------------------------------+ +-------------------+ 3) Issue a Format Unit command with the desired Interleaving Factor. Sector Interleaving ------------------- Sector interleaving enables the data transfer rate required on SCSI during read or write operation of contiguous blocks to be decreased. The Format unit command permits a sector interval between blocks to be specified as an interleaving factor. The user need not be concern- ed with correspondences of blocks with their physical sector locations, because any data access after the completion of formatting is performed in accordance with the block arrangement. Data buffer ----------- IDD contains 16 KG data buffer to improve the total system throughput. Low power consumption --------------------- The power consumption is 32 W (typical). This low power consumption enables the unit to be used in a wide environmental temperature range (5*C to 45*C) without a cooling fan. Low noise and low vibration --------------------------- The IDD's low noise input, approx. 45 dB (A-scale weighting) even during seeking, makes it ideal for office use. The IDD has four rubber vibration isolators, which minimize the transfer of motion. Start and stop time ------------------- Start time is 20 seconds or less, and stop time is 15 seconds or less using dynamic braking to prevent disk and head wear. Reliability ----------- Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) The estimated MTBF of theIDD during its life time is 30,000 hours after an initial 3-month period. Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) MTTR is the average time taken by a well-trained service mechanic to diagnose and repair a unit malfunction. IDD is designed for a MTTR of 30 minutes or less. Service Life Overhaul of the drive is not required for the first five years. Spindle Motor ------------- The disk turned by a direct-drive DC motor. The motor attains a very precise rotational speed of 3600 rpm, 1%. This precision is achieved through a feedback circuit which includes Hall-effect elements mounted within the motor assembly.
