 ==============

 J1 Option Jumper
 ----------------
The MK-438FB and MK-53XBF have one jumper block, J1 (use 2mm jumper
 part numbers: P/N 037001 [Toshiba] or P/N 86730-001 [Dupont].

 CAUTION
Manufacturing pin location is for factory use only. If jumper is
installed, data will be destroyed on drive.

MANUFACTURING ENABLE (J1-PIN 1&2) - CAUTION FACTORY USE ONLY

UNIT ATTENTION ENABLE (J1-PINS 3&4) - PRESENT WHEN SHIPPED
Removal will inhibit ubit attention at power on or SCSI reset.

START ON COMMAND ENABLE (J1-PINS 5&6) - PRESENT WHEN SHIPPED
When removed the spindle motor will start only on receipt of the
 Start Unit command.

SCSI BUS PARITY ENABLE (J1-PINS 7&8) - PRESENT WHEN SHIPPED
When removed, drive will not check for parity.

SPINDLE SYNCHRONIZATION (J1-PINS 9-12) - PINS 11&12 NOT PRESENT WHEN
SHIPPED SPARE JUMPER LOCATED AT PINS 9&10 WHEN SHIPPED
Spindle Synchronization capability accommodated using a 4-pin cable
connector (pins 9 - 12 of jumper block).

TERMINATOR POWER SOURCE (J1-PINS 13&14) - PRESENT WHEN SHIPPED
When removed, drive does not supply terminator power. The SCSI BUS
requires termination to be installed on the last unit located on the
BUS. There are two versions of the PCB. One version use three (3) SIP
Resistors (RN1, RN2 & RN3) to provide BUS termination. The other
version uses a SCSI in-line cable terminator (this terminator is
shipped with the drive in a separate bag).

EXTERNAL LED (J1-PINS 15&16) - NOT PRESENT WHEN SHIPPED
An external LED may be driven by connecting the cathode to pin 16 and
the anode to pin 15 on the jumper block.

SCSI BUS ID (J1 PINS 17-22)
Jumper J1, pins 17-22, are used to select the SCSI ID of the drive.
The drive can be selected to have any ID in the range 0 through 7. No
two devices on the same SCSI bus can have the same ID.

TOSHIBA MK-438FB/MK-53XFB INSTALLATION NOTES P/N 480033-G0

 Notes on Installation
 =====================

 Mounting
 --------
When mounting the drive, adequate clearance should be provided from
the outer surface of the HDA and PCB to allow vibration to be ab-
sorbed by the drive shock mounts and to allow for the passage of
 cooling ir over the drive.

 WARNING
The side mounting screw must not penetrate into the drive frame more
than 0.10 inches (2.5mm) or damage to the HDA will result. Length of
 screw = Thickness of mounting material + 0.05 - 0.10 inches. Typical
screw length for most applications is 3/16". (A washer should be used
to meet non-standard screw length requirements.)

 Cooling and disk drive enclosure
 --------------------------------
The MK-438FB and MK-53XFB can be mounted vertically or horizontally.
Convection cooling is used. It is recommended that cabinetry design
allow for adequate air flow. The disk enclosure must be designed to
maintain an even temperature within the drive's environmental limits
and throughout the drive's various components.

 Terminator Resistors
 --------------------
The resistors must be removed on all but the last physical device on
 the SCSI BUS.

 Optional Hard Disk Drive Kits
 -----------------------------
If desired, an optional 3.5" hard drive mounting kit (P/N HDD002KU)
is available for mounting the hard drive in a 5.25" half height
cavity. Also available are PC/AT mounting rails (P/N AT8001T).

 The following accesories are available:

P/N 290000003-A0 SCSI ID cable for remote selection of ID
P/N CAB-01-24 SCSI 50 Pin Flat Ribbon Cable
 P/N 140-001 External SCSI Bus single-ended terminator
                   (Method Electronics, Inc. P/N SP-550-06-0)
P/N 270008-A1 LED extension cable assembly

Versions of ONTRACK's DiskManager for DOS, Macintosh operating
systems and DiskManager-N for Novell Network systems can be used with
 this drive.

 General Description
 -------------------
The MK-438FB and MK-53XFB series consist of 3.5-inch hard disk drives
designed primarily for high performance personal computers such as
IBM PC/AT or compatible, Apple Macintosh and Sun Micro Work Stations.

 CAUTION
Please use caution when handling and installing drive. Avoid
excessive shock, vibration and static build up in the installation
environment. The MK-438FB and MK-53XFB are precision devices, do not
drop drive onto a surface. Until drive is mounted in your system, its
built in shock absorbers are inactive and even a small drop may
 cause permanent damage.
